Already considered a leading tastemaker by the fashion industry in the late 60’s and nicknamed the “boy genius of haute couture”, he masterfully captured the zeitgeist of the time which in the words of Christian Lacroix was described as “A glamorous, sensual era when there were no barriers and no limits! There was unbridled sex and very chic drugs. There was a type of woman then who was clever and beautiful, but with a real audacity and she dressed in Yves Saint Laurent.”
His Rive Gauche prêt-à-porter boutique in 1966 and was an instant success, and was quickly followed by another in London in 1969. YSL succeeded in revolutionizing fashion in many ways including being the first couturier to launch a prêt-à-porter collection, and developing the modern show schedule of 2 couture shows, and 2 prêt-à-porter shows a year.
